About Scanograms

Hello!

My name is Kassy O’Shea, and I’m a 30-something female (she/her) living in a small country town in the central west of New South Wales, Australia. I am a creative person, and I love to express myself through various mediums. I am currently studying graphic design/photography at CSU, and you can learn more about me on my portfolio or blog.

Why I love scanography

I love scanography because it is a versatile alternative photographic process that allows you to create distinctive pieces. I have always been fascinated by macro photography and observing the fine, intimate details, and for me, scanography compliments this through a unique perspective.

discovered scanography while studying Analogue Photography at CSU in 2021. I connected with the medium and found great joy experimenting with straight, abstracted and painted scanograms.

Process

My process for creating scanograms involves locating subjects that have interesting visual appeal. Then, I preview the objects in the scanner at a low resolution, and once I am happy with the arrangement will use the highest resolution possible. Finally, when the scanning is complete, I finalise the work in Photoshop to make the pieces pop.

Equipment

I currently use an HP Deskjet 3630, which is a standard printer/scanner all-in-one model. The highest resolution is 1200ppi, and I plan to upgrade to work with higher quality imagery.
